Jokes and speeches

30 Nov

Sadly I was missing for about a month (but it could be more and I’m sorry. The past month my computer died so I had to wait for my laptop to  come in and am currently trying to get caught up on posts that are works in progress, editing as well as scheduling for the next year (and that’s not just for this blog. I have a few others) So I do hope at least once if not twice a month I will be able to get a post out in the new year. With that and an early Happy Holidays and New year wish out of the way…

It’s that time of year where we toast and make speeches

so I thought now would be a good time to publish this post.

They say when you give a speech start it with a joke or have one in it. This loosens up you and  audience.  No one likes to listen to speeches, so you need a way to keep your audience from being bored and falling asleep (same thing with presentations at meetings)

You need to keep things entertaining.. Whatever your audience, and subject have visual information, some facts, stats and a video to show, include a joke or 2 but  don’t just drone on about your topic.

Think of it this way: if your worst enemy or the most boring person you know complete with that monotone speaking voice is giving some speech/presentation,  there is NO WAY you are interested.

Now think what if  you are that boring person, or have to give a speech or presentation in front of your enemy?

What if all you do is use facts and stats? That gets monotonous even without that tone of voice. People start to doodle, check the time and so on,  it can even give one a headache.

I prefer not just hearing the speech, I would like some pamphlet or packet of some sort so I can look at the stats and other information besides listening to you, as well as seeing a few visuals and other various ways of telling information. Remember one’s mind tends to wander if you are not interested even if you have the most entertaining manner, speech and presentation.

You need to keep your audience hooked. i know these won’t work with everything and they are likely dry humor but that’s another thing, you need to change your tone through out your speech, make a sarcastic remark to something you don’t agree your voice needs to rise and fall and most of all you need to be passionate, that is the best way to keep one’s attention.

Think of it this way… Martin Luther King’s Speech  and if you’ve seen Pacific Rim (yeah the first one) that inspiring speech Idris Elba’s character gives toward the end… gave me chills. That’s a way to light a fire under someone’s ass!

Here I have come across some Victorian Jokes (and yes the bit in the sidebar is from here)

Also it’s best to keep what you are doing under a certain time limit. No one likes a big long winded speech or hour long presentation. Sometimes yes it does need to be longer but best to keep shorter to answer questions as well if anyone has any!

If you are expected to do a pitch for a half hour… try to keep it to 15 minutes, let them know there should be time for Questions after.
