How to write poetry

How to write poetry: Poet Wendy Cope explains what makes a really superb poem

For me it just starts with inspiration which is an idea, I scribble it down (sometimes I can’t make out a word later on but I keep at figuring it out)

Sometimes I get stuck with only a line and I toil over years with finishing it or just include it for a later idea (I have a page of ideas of phrases etc. word play and so on)

Read! There have been times where a paragraph or description in a book has inspired me! Pay attention to Pop culture (I have a poem pertaining to this a bit and it’s one of my humorous ones at least supposed to be)

I  play sort of a game, in which for example I use the songs on an album   (or a bands catalog …all their song titles) as prompts and try to fit them all into a poem (or some sort of creative writing) I used to do with with my vocabulary words in school sometimes.

Want some words for prompts?

I’ll start you with 5

Melancholy

Defiance

Mercurial

turbid

perfunctory

and a BONUS

one of my favorite words…

BOISTEROUS– this is my favorite vocab word from school ever! I still remember the day we were reading our sentences for example and I knew I had an great one. I raised my hand to read it and the teach thought it was used perfectly. (If only I could remember the way I worded the sentence! I do believe it is in one of my poems So you can check that page in the menu.) It was something like the Boisterous roars of thunder.

52 Week Writing Challenge

Here’s an idea for us busy bodies who can never seem to get our writing in!

Instead of trying to get so much time in a day, do a little each day for a week. Write short stories, even if its only 1 page front and back, write for 5 minutes, poems whatever you think of. Don’t forget to shut the world out, especially out of mind. Make a character sketch for someone you see during lunch at work, or outside in the park.

Rain Reveals poetry on the sidewalks of Boston

I saw this headline, and thought This is a great Idea. It doesn’t have to be poetry, but maybe a quote and can bring out the sun on a rainy day, or even jsut a day when you feel like that black is just hanging over you.

It’s a nice idea for rainy days to break up the monotony of your commute, and for those sunny days, well an excuse to carry a bigger water bottle for ‘treasure hunting’ besides you’ll be hydrating yourself, and as for the sidewalks just spray the pavement once or twice to see if there’s a surprise.

(and I want some of that ‘paint’ I could that on my handmade gifts)  and why not do this at the beach too on the board walks, (would it work on wood?) or at least the pavement in the amusement parks, maybe use it for a scavenger hunt!!

How do you work on your poems

This sounded somewhat how I work on my poems. They usually end up starting on a scrap piece of paper, which I actually pencil into a journal so it won’t get lost and to work on. Usually if I get a paragraph (stanza) to a freestyle Prose or rhyming poem it usually stays as is. Then I have to work on a finish (which there are some from the early 2000s I am still working on!)

Once I get the wording the way I like, I type it up into a word file, set a font I think best ‘matches’ the theme (for instance, if it’s a poem about the winter, I use the font I have with snow on the letters)  so I like some form of illustration in my poems. There are some I have even included an  image under.
